I have attended several seminars with Spyros and Lynn, the instructors at Two Rivers Aikikai, and while I've never been a guest at their dojo, would recommend them as people and as teachers.

Ive trained with Spiros and Lynn. While Its not my 'style' I enjoyed working out with them and the 4 months I spent at TRA was a good experience.

I also trained with some folks that branched off from their dojo - particularly Neil Lofgren at Ecol De Budo - www.ecoledebudo.com. I enjoyed training with Neil very much, we had a summer of great morning sessions. His approach was warm and personable, and very direct and martial at the same time- a great combo.

of course, the folks at Multnomah Aikikai in SW on Macadam are worth mentioning. While I only stopped in once, and didnt train, I was impressed with the greeting and what I saw on the mat. thier jyo practice was the smoove!

There are several others I have heard great things about, but I haven't visited them yet.
      all in good time.

having said all that, Im right across the river in Vancouver, and have just opened classes through the local parks and recreation department. My senior student and I are working to build a space in Battleground.

if you ever feel like jumping across the river, check us out! were just starting up, so while were having small (3-4 students currently) beginners level classes, the more the merrier, and having a new folks who can take their falls and deliver them will benefit everyone!

      good luck!

Vancouver is a little far for me, but thank you for the offer. I'm currently 10 miles East of Oregon City and it takes a minimum of 45 minutes just to get to downtown Portland from here.

I'm going to check-out TRA tomorrow.

I have to agree with you about Multnomah Aikikai, at least in comparison to Portland Aikikai. Although I found people at both friendly, I liked the instruction and interaction at Multnomah better (I observed and trained once at Portland but only observed at Multnomah). I'll be honest, I'm very picky and so far neither is fully to my liking.

I started my training in 1990 at UCSC under Jerilyn Munyon, the program there is afiliated with Aikido of Santa Cruz (Linda Holiday). Jerilyn was a great instructor; teaching very clean, effective and precise techniques which balanced the martial and the ki. When I graduated in 1993, I stopped training but have since gone back a few times (the last one was 5 years ago). So far, I've had trouble finding another dojo like Aikido of Santa Cruz, though San Jose Aikido (Jack Wada) and Redwood City Aikido (Frank Doran) are similar.

Hi, I'm stepping into this discussion a couple months late. Did you try 2 Rivers? Like it? I haven't trained there but I know Spiros from other contexts and he is a true Aikidoka in his daily life. Playful, engaged, connected.

I train at the Oregon Ki Society (www.oregonki.org). Our headquarters dojo is just off the Hain St. (Tigard) exit of I-5, so that is pretty close to your location in Oregon City. The Tigard HQ has some evening classes, and an amazing Sunday morning Ki class (11 AM) where Calvin Tabata Sensei teaches - not to be missed. He is incredibly powerful and focused. I attend Sunday morning class but generally train at our dojo in SE Portland, on Milwaukie near Powell/Clinton/railroad tracks. (This is the dojo that used to be at 19th and Hawthorne, for those who remember that).

Ki Society is pretty different from the other forms of Aikido. We have an hour of Ki class, then about an hour and a half of Aikido. In Ki class we learn how to focus, extend ki, move correctly, etc. We do exercises that are basically games - like trying to keep your feet on the ground while being picked up by two other people. Usually pretty fun but also very challenging. It took me several years of training to feel like I was not terrible at Ki. Still plenty to learn after 7 years. :-) Then in Aikido class, all the throws are taught with an emphasis on Ki. We are taught specific techniques but also are shown quite clearly that if the Ki is correct, the technique doesn't have to be perfect. The rhythm of the throw is important as it reflects how well you are leading your partner.

Anyway, I have no idea whether this would be your cup of tea, but feel free to stop by for a free class and try it out. And please post back and let us know if you found a dojo that you like. :-)

            Hi Karin,

I've done some training at 2 Rivers and it is ok. There are some things I like about it and others I don't. On the whole, not what I'm looking for but that is me.

The few times I've trained in Ki Society dojo, I've found them empty - neither martial (people taking falls because they were expected to, not because the technique was done correctly) nor having much ki (there was a lot of talk about ki but none present). That says nothing about your dojo, however my experience makes me reluctant to try other Ki Society dojo. I might stop by when I have time.
