new to SF...where to practice?

topic posted Thu, January 11, 2007 - 3:58 PM by  offlineAngela
I am new to SF and new to Aikido and wondering where the best place is to learn.
I am intersted in a rigorous but not too formal atmosphere, good community, attention to the non-physical aspects of the art form and for classes or mat time to be fairly affordable.
thanks

I recommend City Aikido. Sensei Bob Nadeau is a 7th Dan Shihan and was a direct student of O'Sensei. He is extremely concerned with the Principles of aikido, and using them in daily life, and leads several Energy Awareness seminars during the year.
Tye dojo has an excellent teaching staff, classes every day, morning, noon & evening, and wepons on Sunday morning.

I drop in when its convenient...

My dojo is quite nice. ;-)

We train hard, but without pretend formality. Lots of sweat and laughs. But, self interest aside, we let anyone who is looking about take a first class for free. I believe lots of other dojos in the city do the same, although it has been a while since I have gone visiting (I should make rounds again soon....). Check out the vibes of the different dojos, find out what works best for you for location, scheduling, mojo, and expense. Always a good idea to shop around.

If you plan on trying our place, let em know and I'll see if I can be on hand to show you around. And, best of luck in finding a good place you can really enjoy!
