I am new to SF and new to Aikido and wondering where the best place is to learn.
I am intersted in a rigorous but not too formal atmosphere, good community, attention to the non-physical aspects of the art form and for classes or mat time to be fairly affordable.
thanks

Re: new to SF...where to practice?
Thu, January 11, 2007 - 4:21 PMI recommend City Aikido. Sensei Bob Nadeau is a 7th Dan Shihan and was a direct student of O'Sensei. He is extremely concerned with the Principles of aikido, and using them in daily life, and leads several Energy Awareness seminars during the year.
Tye dojo has an excellent teaching staff, classes every day, morning, noon & evening, and wepons on Sunday morning.

Thu, January 11, 2007 - 4:27 PMMy dojo is quite nice. ;-)

We train hard, but without pretend formality. Lots of sweat and laughs. But, self interest aside, we let anyone who is looking about take a first class for free. I believe lots of other dojos in the city do the same, although it has been a while since I have gone visiting (I should make rounds again soon....). Check out the vibes of the different dojos, find out what works best for you for location, scheduling, mojo, and expense. Always a good idea to shop around.
If you plan on trying our place, let em know and I'll see if I can be on hand to show you around. And, best of luck in finding a good place you can really enjoy!

Re: new to SF...where to practice?
Fri, January 12, 2007 - 7:16 PMYes! What T-Bone said. Plus, we have tough women. At most dojos I've seen, most of the women do everything at half the speed and a quarter the intensity of the men. That is not the case here. -

Wed, January 17, 2007 - 9:00 AMI'm a longtime member and webmistress for City Aikido but suggest you visit both City Aikido AND Suginami Aikikai - I unreservedly recommend both of them and you may, on observing, find there is something that speaks more to you in one than the other.

Re: new to SF...where to practice?
Sun, June 3, 2007 - 1:36 PMI strongly recommend City Aikido as well. I trained with Nadeau and Wada senseis at Aikido of San Jose. Nadeau sensei is great.
